Oh, my God.This is not at all for the faint of heart--if you have a problem with graphic violence in books, be warned--but the delicate sensibility of the reader is SO not the point. Set in Jamaica at the turn of the nineteenth century, during the years leading up to one of the innumerable slave revolts, The Book of Night Women is upsetting and provocative and jaw-droppingly well written. It's an important addition to the conversation that art allows us to have about race and violence and the horrible, horrible events of history. It should be read. You should read it. An incredible, disturbing, and important book. It took me a while to get into the rhythm of the writing, as the author writes in the speech patterns of slaves in 1800 Jamaica. I also had to take a breather occasionally as the absolute horror of what was done to the women in the book by their white owners was extremely disturbing. I think it's an important book to read as it reminds us of just how horrendous the lives of those living in slavery was, especially for women.
