I've only been on the teacher side of the desk for four years, but I'm thoroughly convinced that this idea is what's going to change education. It would have changed my education for sure. Penny Kittle clearly knows the students of today.Not only does she enlighten on her philosophy, but she also elaborates on practical ways educators could apply this in the classroom. My whole classroom format will change because I read this book and I believe my students will be better for it. Penny Kittle presents an ever-important issue that teachers need to address. We need our students to be passionate readers. We need our students to be able to sustain silent reading for long periods of time. We need our students to read books that engage them and get them hooked on reading. We need to challenge the way educators think about the teaching of reading. We need our students to love books. The author does a brilliant job weaving together vignettes of her experience as a reading teacher with research to support her claims. She includes insight and feedback from her students about reading. She tells the moving story of how she has gotten non-readers to become readers. While at times, there was too much of her in the book, it's a vital professional development text all teachers and educators need to read. We need to create a culture of reading in and out of our classrooms.
