While I loved the overall premise of the story and the characters I found the book to be just a touch unbelievable, laughable even. Every, single, bad thing that could happen to a person did. Breaks-ins, snakes, wolves, stampedes, plotting family members, family feuds, swooning...it felt a little like the author couldn't quite decide what to have happen and so everything happened. The story would have been SO much stronger if a little more attention had been spent on the main couple and a little less on having them suffer through every dramatic devise in the dictionary. And as others have mentioned, the faith aspect did not flow seamlessly but instead felt jarring, like it had been thrown in because the book was nearing an end and that scene hadn't transpired just yet. Still a good reading but it could have been so much better. Intriguing concept, and the characters were kind of interesting, but the story didn't seem patricularly coherent or credible. I wanted some sort of support system for Lucy-- church, even just close friends; maybe I'm being too idealistic or naive, but I find it difficult to imagine a Christian girl who is as hardworking and faithful as she is portrayed to be and who has lived in the same town for as long as she has being so utterly alone and desperate; and without that "no other choice" premise, the rest of the plot falls apart too.I found the message of trusting God/giving up control interesting, and I'm not sure the story does it justice.

I understand a little bit about Lucy... but she still bothered me at times... more like 3.5 stars.
