I enjoyed this enough to read it twice. The blend of natural and supernatural made it easy to accept the supernatural aspects of the story. The main character was easy to relate with. After reading this I read the next 3 books in the series in quick succession and was disappointed that I would have to wait to see what happened next with this cast. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Aguirre. Great fun for a beach read or a weekend diversion from reality. The whole thing was pretty impractical and I had been hoping/expecting that our protogonist, Corine would be cooler or better fitted to a sketcy life of being on the run than a nap sack. That is, she really was like a napsack. The writing wasn't bad but either I had been blinded by my reading sabbatical or Agguire's Bronze God was more cleanly written. The whole thing was a little two romantic for me- in more ways than one. I didn't find the romance or the cliched love triangle very engaging either.On a similar note, the prose tended to crash whenever Aguirre tried too hard at romantic or otherwise flowery imagery.Overall, I found the book a bit disappointing and dragged out but not an entirely unpleasant read. I am pleased to say that she SLOWLY grows through-out the series. Actively disliked Corine until teh end of Shady Lady. By Devil's Punch, she's only mildly intolerably.
