Sure, this book delivers on colors and patterns. Sort of. But that's it. The art is awesome. This author never disappoints. I wish I could draw even half as well as she can. But, the story leaves quite a bit to be desired. I'd consider this deserving about a 2 in the story department, and 5 in illustration. So, prepare for awesome chameleon pictures and a bleh rest of the book. A few pages are so beautiful they should be framed and mounted in children's rooms. Frankly, that might be the best use of this book. Borrow it. In very few words Gravett tells the story of a lonely chameleon looking for a friend. He almost gives up, when he finds someone he goes with perfectly. I think this book would make a splendid lapsit time to share with an older toddler/preschooler about what a chameleon is, about the different colors and patterns and also go into the feelings the chameleon is displaying.If you really thought on this one, you might see the moral of the story being "be yourself and true friends will find you." If you went too deep, you would be disturbed that the chameleon ended up finding companionship only in another chameleon who looked and did things just like him. Anti-diversity? Don't think that deep, folks. Its a nice book. Just enjoy the goodness of it.
