About book Bird Sense: What It's Like To Be A Bird (2012)

Bird Sense, which I snapped up as an Audible Book of the Day, has been an unexpected delight. The author has been an ornithologist for forty years and his passion for science and birds is enthusiastically voiced on every page. The book is organized by senses - sight, hearing, taste, etc, In each section he reveals how scientists have endeavored to discover how bird sight or smell or taste works. Some of this he does through anecdotes that can be quite amusing and some through the questions and experiments scientists devised. The book will delight and amaze both on what you learn about birds and what you read about the scientific process. It only made me more curious about the life of birds who I wake up hearing each morning and whose chatter fills the night air. Overall, an interesting read. Lacking a comprehensive knowledge of birds, I did not always have visual well of an assortment of birds to draw from. Also, there were a surprising lack of visuals, either in the way of drawings and/or photographs. For one with a background in Academia, Birkhead's writing is surprisingly easy and well digested. It was a small delight to read and I only wish the book, as well as avian research, was more inclusive.
