About book Bird Eater, The (2014)

DNF, which, considering how much I like ghost stories is really saying something. Normally I can push through even if the book isn't great to get the explanation. But with this one I stopped reading right in the middle of the climax because I just could not waste another second on it.The idea is cool I guess, but I feel like that's all the author had - a cool creepy idea and not much else. The characters were ... not good. You can kinda feel sorry for Aaron at the beginning, but he very quickly becomes intolerable. Cheri had no personality except to fall all over herself the second she saw Aaron. And as other reviewers have said what the heck is the point of making a central character an amateur ghost hunter if literally nothing comes from it?The pacing is way off. Aaron goes way too long insisting the ghost is just some kid who's bothering him. When the reader knows it's the ghost from the start, the insistence becomes repetitive and boring. Speaking of the ghost, he was also not developed well. Like I said it was a cool creepy idea, but a ghost kid who runs around eating birds (and possibly raping people??) should probably have some reason to be an evil ghost kid other than "I thought it would be creepy" which as far as I got was the only one.I was pretty much actively rooting for everyone to die by the time I stopped reading. The story starts out great and has some genuinely creepy elements - not something I can say about many books, but ulimately the ending left me a bit disatisfied. Not horrible, but I don't think I'd re-read this book in the future. The author seems to have written this book with a movie adaptation in mind, which keeps things moving, but at the expense of character development and overall back story. A decent thriller if you need a weekend quickie.

Reminds me of early Stephen King - great characters, bizarre, abrupt ending.
