Although this multicultural story never identifies the foreign country the family comes from, the clothing and realistic facial features in the illustrations, and the choices made by the mother, imply she is unfamiliar with U.S. customs. A young girl is forced by her mother to take her uninvited whiny younger sister to her classmate's birthday party, and has to pay the price for it, she no longer receives party invitations. The ending of this tale has a lovely message of friendship and forgiveness, making it a great choice for a read aloud. I bought it because I'm a huge fan of illustrator Sophie Blackall, and yes her colorful animated illustrations made the story come alive. Big Red LollipopAuthor: Rukhsana KahnIllustrator: Sophie BlackallBig Red Lollipop is an excellent picture book about two sisters experiencing a little bit of what comes around, goes around. Rubina (the oldest sister) is faced with the choice of doing the kind thing vs. doing the right thing. The book is filled with great illustrations and a great lesson. Opening Moves:1. Show cover of the book. Identify author and illustrator.
