I really wanted to like this book. Truly. The cover was beautiful and it is post civil war. I liked the characters, and the story was good. However, oddly, there really was not very much of it. Not much happens in these 300 pages. This story could have really benefited from a ruthless strikeout editor that shortened it by 100 pages... at least. I am confused about why people are rating this book so highly. It was S...L....O...W. and though I loved both characters at the beginning, as i read on I didn't like them quite as much and felt the romance was missing some serious spark. I want some humor, some spark, I want either more to happen, or this book to be shorted significantly. I wanted to like it, but frankly I just feel surprised that I was able to get through the whole thing. Although this author has been successful in other genres, this is her first venture into Christian romance. I must say that she has been successful here, too. This story teaches many Christian principles while telling a beautiful romantic story. How else could two characters, one a Yankee lady from Boston and the other a Southern gentleman from Texas, meet in Tennessee and fall in love? The characters and the setting deals with many flaws in character and public opinion that are still problems today. The Christian values are there in the story, but I didn’t find them overt or preachy. The author has done a terrific job with this story. There is no blatant sexuality. I would recommend it to thoughtful people, particularly those who enjoy tasteful romance.
