This sizzling little short once again proves that Kim Dare writes a nice BDSM story. Admittedly the bdsm element in this particular tale, Better Than Sex is a bit tame but still the sex scenes pack a bit of heat and are delightful to read.Unfortunately it was the in-between that fell a bit flat for me. I really enjoyed Brody's character, his slight naiveté, his uncertainty over whether he was, in fact, reading the signals Wallace was giving off correctly, these things added up to a very sweet submissive male who one could just fall in love with a bit.Unfortunately I did not feel the same way about Wallace. He had just the right amount of arrogance that suited his dominant nature but even though we were privy to the thoughts running through his mind I wasn't all that smitten with his character. I felt he was a bit condescending and even uncaring when it came to guiding Brody through his first experience with bdsm.I honestly failed to see the emotional connection between these two men and that is almost certainly a hallmark of Kim Dare's work--that near insta-love that she does so well. Instead we were given a glimpse into the possibility of a future for these two but still left wondering if this might not end up being a one night stand. And, coming to expect a good wrap-up to most, if not all, of Kim Dare's stories, this one fell short of the mark. As a general rule, PWP short stories just don't work for me. Kim Dare can be one of the exceptions to this rule, but this book wasn't. I think shorts work best for me when there is an established relationship or obvious & strong emotions between the two characters. Ones like this one (that are more just two people hooking up) click with me only the stars have to align perfectly and they just didn't here.
