About book Beswitched (2010)

"Beswitched" by Kate Saunders is definitely the best book I've read so far this year. The plot was sometimes a little confusing because of the time travel, but many times that is what made it SO interesting. I loved how a girl who is from the 20th century can fit in to 1935 and eventually love it. Flora went from being disgusted by everything from the 1935 boarding school, to wishing that she would never leave (except to see her real parents). The coolest parts is how one of her friends from boarding school turned out to be her very own Grandmother! Overall, I would recommend this to 6th to 8th graders. This one was okay, but I wanted more than I got from it. The plot was a bit anti-climactic, but the author did a nice job of portraying 1930s England and explaining what it'd be like for a time-traveler.Also, definitely for a mature middle-grade reader. There are some weird little sexual references (talking about Grandma sleeping with a lot of people and the mention of a comedic striptease at the end), and lots of rude-ish British slang that would probably seem more rude to British people than to people from the US (bollox, etc.).
