I read this book all in one sitting, because I just had to know, what in the world is going to happen to this poor girl next?! I'm not generally a fan of Christian fiction, but I am a huge fan of history and historical fiction. The historical detail seemed pretty accurate, and I have no quibble with that, but the way the "hero" treats his wife... abominable. Absolutely awful. I suppose that the point is to show that she is strong in her Christian faith despite her sinful ways, while he is weak and not a "true" Christian, but good grief! I shall be honest: I only read this book because I got it free for my Kindle. That being said, my expectations were not too high. The writing was elementary. Some emotions weren't fully felt, some events just worked out too perfectly too quickly, other things I wish we could have explored (Halston) weren't, Eliza could be a little too perfect........but the pure nature and events kept me reading on. Set during the Revolutionary War? Nice. Moving to unexplored wilderness where angry Indians seem to abound? Intriguing. The idea of falling in love with your husband, but he has other priorities? Realistic. Then the overall treatment Eliza received from her husband kept me reading on hoping for a happy, peaceful resolution. It isn't a book I would recommend to anyone outright. If you are a fan of basic, not expertly written romance novels, check it out. Like I said, I got it for free and I am glad I did. However, I might still have to check out book 2, if I can find for a cheap cost, to see if I can discover a resolution between Eliza and Hayward.
