This book has such a simple, but odd, concept and it makes it work. Bah, the goat, finds one sock. Beep, the robot, makes it his mission to find the mate for this single sock. Together the pair search high and low and ask every animal along the way if they have seen the matching sock. This silly story contains so much subtle humor in the reactions of the questioned animals and the signs along the way as Beep and Bah look for the sock, that it bears repeated reading. Kids especially love the surprise ending and finding the missing sock. The color illustrations drawn in a comic book fashion make this a fun read. The illustrator also does an excellent job of portraying the emotions of the characters and gives the reader a sense of being part of the story. Beep, a confident and curious robot, and Bah, a goat who prefers to stay at home, set off on an adventure that involves finding the missing mate to a red-striped sock Bah finds. Guided by "the smell of adventure" (unpaginated), they offer it to a variety of possible owners, including a pig, a chicken, and a bull. Up and down hills and through quicksand they go, but no one claims the sock. The text and illustrations contain some clever word play and visual humor, and readers will laugh when they reach the last page. The book contains several examples of onomatopoeia. The cartoon panels are filled with interesting colors that will keep readers interested as the friends continue their quest to reunite two socks. While it's not necessarily my favorite type of reading material, this title will be popular with young readers.
