Un giorno sua madre, l’imperatrice Maria Teresa d’Austria, le comunica che molto presto andrà in sposa al delfino di Francia. Da questo momento per la giovane figlia di casa Asburgo ha inizio un duro periodo nel quale sarà preparata a divenire una perfetta principessa francese. Dure ore di erudizione sulla lingua e la storia francese, lezioni di portamento, di ballo, sedute per migliorare l’aspetto fisico. Quando la giovane incontrerà suo marito, si troverà catapultata nel mondo sfarzoso della corte dei Borbone. Un mondo fatto di pettegolezzi, intrighi e difficoltà nel rapporto col delfino, il quale non riesce a superare un misterioso blocco psicologico che lo rende distante nei confronti della povera moglie.“La sua voce tremava per l’emozione e anche per qualcos’altro: il senso di trionfo.”L’opera offre un ottimo spaccato sulla società prima asburgica e poi borbonica della seconda metà del ‘700.Assolutamente ben riusciti sono i personaggi di Maria Antonietta e di Luigi Augusto.La prima subisce una grande trasformazione. Viene presentata inizialmente come una bambina costretta a crescere in fretta e poi come una sovrana che deve armarsi anche di astuzia oltre che di saggezza, per fronteggiare i problemi personali e le particolari logiche della ragion di Stato.Il futuro sovrano, anch’egli poco più che un bambino, combatte tra il rincorrere le sue passioni e le responsabilità coniugali, in primis, garantire alla nazione un erede. Un inetto per molti, ma una grande speranza per la nazione.Lo stile, semplice, fluido e lineare, permette di rendere il lettore protagonista delle vicende narrate. Questi, oltre che partecipare, come se fosse un ospite, alle vicende di casa Borbone, ha la possibilità di entrare in medias res nella vita del tempo e di prendere coscienza della condizione della nobiltà in un’epoca nella quale i matrimoni non si celebravano per amore, ma facevano parte di un ben più ampio disegno politico che avrebbe, inevitabilmente, influito sulla situazione europea fino ai giorni nostri. This book would have benefited from an editor. There was a lot of period-specific detail, which I know is prized by lovers of historical fiction. But there was SO MUCH of it, and not a whole lot of forward progression. I had thought a novel about Marie Antoinette would have to be gripping, but she managed to take rich material and make it drawn-out and dull. I did learn some things from this, but geez, it took an awful long time.This is the first in a planned trilogy, so it starts when she's a little girl, still in Vienna, still under the guardianship of her mother, Empress Maria-Theresa of Austria. I don't know if it's the little-girl voice of the author, Juliet Grey, or what, but it was so cloying and saccharine-sweet, I found it a bit hard to swallow.The book progresses -- slowly and with painstaking detail -- from her childish adolescence, to her preparation to be married to the Dauphin of France, to the wedding itself, to the conversations she has with members of her new husband's family, to the painful nights when sex between them does not happen, to the death of the King and their accession to the throne. That's as far as it gets. Not even within a decade of the Revolution.Marie Antoinette came off as kind of an idiot. I don't know if that was a mistake due to the author's lack of awareness of how her character was coming across, or if she was that way in real life. If she was really that way, I would have liked a sense of WHY she was slow to pick up on people's hidden agendas. I also got impatient with the multitude of unsuccessful attempts to have sex, and Louis August's mysterious pain in his male parts. I wanted to know if he was gay or what, so I looked it up. I learned in a 9-paragraph article posted online what the deal was -- they think he had a condition where his penis was basically constrained by the skin -- and how & why they figured this out and what they did about this. Meanwhile, after 13 disk's worth of fiction, there was still no explanation or even a supposition about what was up (or not up) with Louis. Yes, that's true to life. It did take years before anybody solved the problem. But sometimes art works better if it fast forwards or conflates or otherwise edits what really happened.
