About book Because We Are: A Novel Of Haiti (2000)
If you notice the silhouettes at the start of each time-shift you will not get lost. When Libète faces left you will find her past, when right you will have her present. I enjoyed the non-linear unfolding of the story through the many flashbacks and POV shifts. I never once felt lost - thanks to the clever device of silhouettes. Because We Are is a gorgeously well-written novel. The characters are richly drawn and so very likable. Libète is a plucky heroine I will not soon forget. This story is driven by plot as well as by characters - Haiti comes alive as a complex character in its own right. Although the subject matter is gritty, stirring, and down-right harrowing, the story is told with such sweet and gentle awareness - a feat that can be considered masterful. I also really enjoyed the proverbs included at the start of each chapter. The lack of quotations was also refreshing and always welcomed by me. I am gobsmacked to find this is Oswald's first novel. Well Done. It should be noted, all proceeds for the book benefit charities serving Haiti. I don't know why but I am having a real "it's not you, it's me" moment with this book. There is nothing particularly wrong with it, it is fairly well-written, but it is just not holding my interest, and I am having such a tough time connecting with the characters. I received it as part of the "first reads" program so I plan to finish it (and it has gotten so many wonderful reviews!), but I need to come back when I am more in the mood for it. Try again soon...
