About book Beautiful Oops! (2010)

This is a fun, hands-on book that shows different ways things can go from being a mistake to visual art. On each page there are flaps that are covered by something (e.g., a stain, a scribble) undesirable. However, when you flip up the flap changes are made and the mistake looks like an animal or an object. The book uses these transformations to show everything can have potential for beauty and that sometimes you just need a change in perspective. I like that this book is interactive and gives examples of "beautiful oops." This book could be used to teach students that it is okay to not be perfect and that an accident or a mistake is not the end of the world. In addition, it could be used to teach them the importance of looking for the positive and the beauty in everything. This book did a good job of making it seem exciting to look at the stains and scribbles in a new way. It gives the reader an opportunity to come up with their own creative fixes before revealing how the author changed the oops. Students with disabilities will be easy to include because each page has a cause-and-effect flap and minimal words. In addition, I think all students will be engaged during the reading of the book and will be inspired to persist when they are doing an art project. I cannot think of any adaptations that would be needed to gain student interest or involve them in the reading of this book. I love love love this book! Found it in an art classroom at a local elementary school while I was there and had to read it. I think this is an awesome book to read to students in any classroom, not just art. It teaches children that it is OKAY to make mistakes and that many times you can turn your mistakes into, in this case, beautiful works of art. Basically, it is not the end of the world if a mistake it made. It is also very hands-on and the illustrations are 3-D and creative.
