About book Be Awesome: Modern Life For Modern Ladies (2013)
'Be Awesome' was a really hit and miss read for me. Sure, parts of it made me laugh and other parts had me nodding my head in agreement but over all I thought Freeman was trying too hard to be funny. It reminded me of the 'The Vagenda' book, in that, Freeman also focused on the pop culture aspects of feminism. Yes, she does touch on the more serious side but not as much as I expected or would have liked. In a nutshell, this is a "carry on" guide for all the ladies out there, especially the single ones.This is a book written by a woman born in the United States and living in UK, so I don’t understand the many complaints about the "first world" subjects that the author tackles.What I liked about the book is that it’s a good reminder of how much subconscious pressure is on the women today. The writer is not afraid to speak her mind (and of course she does it in a relaxed, brainy way), on a range of issues varying from casual to essential, such as: women’s magazines are garbage, men and women can be just friends, eating disorders relate to self hatred issues, feminism is misunderstood and so on.However, I was disappointed to encounter some contradictions in her ideas.For instance, the author gives a lot of examples from the movies only to declare at some point that movies lie. Then why waste my time with invalid analogies?Also, when expressing the adoration for a known woman, the writer adds that this woman fell in love with a married man with whom she had a relationship for the rest of his life while he stayed married with his wife. I wouldn’t consider this fact a merit because I don’t think that being a lifetime mistress is what any woman should dream about.All in one, buy this book, it will prompt you to understand that it’s not you it’s them.
