About book Batman, Vol. 4: Zero Year - Secret City (2014)
I wish I could give Zero Year a better rating...but I just can't. The Arc starts on a pretty dull note; yet another re-telling of Batman's origin story? No thanks, I've seen it a hundred times before. The best moments of the first half are all Jim Gordon and his adjustment to Gotham City.However, the second half of the arc is an entirely different matter. Zero Year quickly picks up the pace, and introduces a familiar face or two, and by the end becomes one of the better Riddler stories I've yet to read. Tips for writing Batman: His parents are dead, we all get it, so move on already This book is excellent and continue the incredible run that Snyder and Capullo are on with Batman. I will say that I enjoyed it a bit less than the first 3 volumes, but even saying that it still merits 5 stars, because these guys are that good.I love that they didn't totally rehash the same old origin story, but also didn't make it crazy and different just for the sake of being different. The story is compelling and moves well, and the artwork is incredible as usual.One of the things I really like about this is that it's got Snyder's first draft at the end of the volume which gives in depth insight into the making of the story and it's fun to go back and look at the pages as you read his description of how he envisions things.I would definitely recommend this book.
