About book Back To Work: Why We Need Smart Government For A Strong Economy (2011)
I enjoyed this book. It helped immensely that the narrator was the author himself. When a book is written by a well-known personality, it's always a plus to have the author narrate the book. Then the reader is listening to the author's voice reading the author's voice (aka narrative.) The reader also needs to keep in mind that this is not a work of objective fact. If one approaches it looking for that, one will come away highly disappointed. This book is more like a really long essay in which Clinton postulates possible solutions to the economic downturn.I recommend this book to all who want to be informed about current events and can read works of opinion with a grain of salt. Clearly, this book came out at a point in political time that was critical for the Obama Administration. I had no illusions about that as I picked this up, some two years later. But Clinton has great talents for leadership and statesmanship which come through in the tone of this book, at a time that these qualities seem to be frustratingly lost. While I wasn't am doubtful about the efficacy of all of the 45+ recommendations that he puts forward, I do think that he was on target with his critique of the anti-government orthodoxy that hijacks any attempts at rational discussion.I would love to see a thoughtful critique of this book from a conservative viewpoint, something that makes a rational case for a different course of action. Like Mr. Clinton, I am tired of the perma-polemic viewpoint about the role of government and taxation, and I believe in the shared responsibility and shared benefit that he professes. But I also recognize that there are limitations of efficiency and effectiveness with any large organization, government included.
