About book Back To Front And Upside Down! (2012)

Stan is trying to make a birthday card for his principal, Mr.Slippers. His drawing is great but his teacher tells him he needs to write happy birthday. Stan becomes very frustrated when his letter are not turning out correctly.Stan does not want to ask for help though. His friend encourages him to keep practicing. After many attempts, Stan's letter turn out the right way round and the right way up. This cute story faces a fear many beginning writers face. It reminds them that practice does make perfect and they will get it correct. The simple watercolor illustrations accompany the words beautifully. This book would be great in a kindergarten classroom. Every one struggles and it is okay to ask for help sometimes. This book is so cute, and it accurately depicts a fear common among students: that they are falling behind but they don’t want to be made fun of for asking for help. A lot of students feel pressured into learning at a certain pace, and they struggle as a result. Stan was so excited to draw pictures for a birthday card for his principal, but was instantly terrified when he heard they he had to write “Happy Birthday” on the card. Stan is still having trouble learning how to write his letters, and he feels self-conscious about it to the point of sweating from the nervousness. But at the end, the teacher was very nice, and told him that it was okay to ask for help when you need it.I would definitely read this book in my classroom. Not only is it on a subject matter that they might personally relate to, but it is written at an emergent level, so it can also be used to have the students practice reading out loud. I would also definitely use this book to teach my students that if you are having trouble with something, that it is okay to ask for help so that they can learn.
