Look, here's the thing, this book isn't targeted at me, so I wasn't wowed by it. I read it for work as a possibility to recommend to our young adult crowd. But hey, there are things to like: Autumn has been diagnosed with dyslexia, and apparently Bella Thorne has it too. What's nice about this is that there are scenes with Autumn struggling with her dyslexia, as well as attending a support group for kids with different academic needs--even included is a tip for dealing with dyslexia that I believe Bella Thorne has either heard, or used herself. That's really awesome, more power to her. The love interest also has an ADP (auditory processing disorder) and they discuss what that is. I almost would have liked to see how that impacts both of them a little more. Sure, it's a fine line between making that a Thing (to quote Autumn) and glossing over it, but in this instance, Autumn's dyslexia really only rears its head in a very coincidental moment. I'm going to call this a Disney movie version of Mean Girls, with the addition of a magic diary. Certain parts of the ending wrap up a bit too nicely, while other parts aren't wrapped up so neatly, and that to me feels better. This is a book about friendship, popularity, and trying to be true to yourself in the middle of all of that. It's not a bad attempt for Bella Thorne--if I was a 7th-10th grade girl I probably would have really loved this. This book made me be thankful, yet again, for social media to have been invented after my high school years. Cyber bullying sucks big time and I'm happy I didn't have to deal with it but it concerns me that my niece and nephews will have to since it is such a big part of high school life nowadays. As far as the book goes, it felt underdeveloped but what was there was good. I think it could have been longer but there was a realistic portrayal of high school life and making new friends and losing loved ones.
