I have wanted to read the original book of AUDITION ever since seeing the truly terrifying Japanese movie of the same name. For those who are curious, there aren't many differences. Both the book and the movie highlight different aspects, but the majority of the story is the same in each.First off, this is NOT a book for those easily offended by graphic imagery. There are some moments in this one that are truly stomach-churning. The horror is also more psychological (until the very famous ending), so it stayed with me much more than the usual "jump out of a dark corner" moments of other horror novels.Most of all, for any man who is "past his prime" and is looking for true romance in his life, this is a soul chilling wake-up call. The character reactions were so believable, and I found myself becoming more and more intrigued despite already knowing the ending from the movie. It may definitely cause the more sensitive among us to question if entering into any new dating relationship is worth it.Well, of course it is. But, the best of horror stories take an aspect of life and turn it into something extremely uncomfortable. This one succeeds admirably.If you didn't quite get enough shock-jolts from reading AMERICAN PSYCHO, try the flip-side with AUDITION. You won't be disappointed. I definitely recommend it to the less queasy among us. I'm not a fan of books that take forever to get to anything interesting, and even though this is a short book, it took forever to have anything happen. I don't recommend this book to anyone. When the action finally arrived I couldn't even read some of it because it was overly gory (and I don't mind gore) and pointless. Personally, I'd like to read more horror novels that don't include animal mutilation and murder. It would please me to no end to have a horror novel just be horrific because of the things humans do to each other, not what they do to animals to strike great in their potential victims. That being said, until the end of the book there wasn't enough intrigue and I found myself skipping through a lot of the book. It was just very dull. This is one case of the movie was more interesting than the book.

What a twisted book! Wish it had been longer, though. Felt too rushed and ended rather abruptly!
