About book Attached: The New Science Of Adult Attachment And How It Can Help You Find -- And Keep -- Love (2010)
Rather than horoscopes or gender stereotypes, this book gives cogent, scientifically-backed explanations of three major attachment styles. As someone who is a textbook case of what they call the "anxious" prototype, I thought being able to analyze what I want and not feel like it was "less-than" was a novel experience.I'd recommend this book to anyone, regardless of where your relationship status is at the moment. A great, very accessible short introduction to attachment theory, geared toward the non-specialist, and written with a practical, self-help slant. The book offers a mixture of summarized research and case studies that illustrate the principles discussed. Throughout, the tone is light and conversational, with an emphasis on outcomes over theory. A weakness of this book is that it segments people too neatly, dividing everyone into either those with a secure attachment style, or those with one of two insecure styles (anxious or avoidant), which runs the risk of ignoring the fact that many people operate with a mix of styles depending on the situation and the triggers with which they are presented. With that caveat in mind, however, the book can provide a lot of useful insight. Its clear, direct style will be a boon to anyone looking for readily usable advice. It's also worth noting that the dynamics it describes apply to non-romantic relationships as well.
