About book As Always, Julia: The Letters Of Julia Child And Avis DeVoto: Food, Friendship, And The Making Of A Masterpiece (2010)

I've been reading this book for MONTHS, and I loved every minute of it. I read it on my Kindle, which made going back to the footnotes (of which there were many) very easy. I am note a foodie, and not even that much of a cook, but I found much to enjoy about this exchange of letters between Julia Child and Avis DeVoto. These two warm, bright women became fast friends through correspondence during a time that the Childs were living primarily overseas from 1952 to 1961, having first learned of each other when Julia wrote a fan letter to Avis' husband, writer Bernard DeVoto. Their letters reveal the politics and culture of the time (including McCarthyism) as well as (the primary intent of the letters) the birth, writing and finally, the publishing of Julia's book, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. What a wonderful, warm friendship between two interesting people. When nothing else seemed to catch my reading interest, I could always go back to Julia and Avis. Obviously I opened this book asking just a bit too much. Yes. I'm a big freaky fan of Julia. In the kitchen, she can do no wrong. And when she does, she tells you how to fix it: More wine, less drama. What's not to like? But this is just as described. Letters - to and from - one special pal. A pal that helped us all know who Julia is, about the creation of what some consider to be the gospel of French cooking for the American, servantless home.It gets tired quickly. How much can one person read about knives?Don't read it. Skim it.
