About book Artemis Fowl And The Last Guardian (2012)
The last book in the Artemis Fowl series, Eoin Colfer excellently orchestrates an adventure that leads the reader from Dublin, Ireland, to Haven, an underground fairy city, and even Atlantis, a fairy prison. Having met Artemis when he was merely a young boy, yet an excellent criminal mastermind, it has been an exciting journey to follow Artemis into his teenage years and beyond petty theft and hostage-taking to saving the world in its darkest hour. This book certainly brings the series to an absolute end, with an apocalyptic feel to it, much like the end of a sci-fi television series. Nevertheless, Colfer delivers an excellent final chapter that brings closure to an exciting run. I have loved Artemis Fowl since I was in high school for one simple reason: Artemis was the bad guy. And to make it better, he was a conflicted bad guy who did NOT see the error of his ways at the end of the first book...or even the second, and only a little at the end of the third. Unlike a lot of stories where the bad guy changes by the end, Artemis didn't. His change was gradual. By the time he becomes the hero, seven books and many years have passed. He goes from being a pre-teen to nearly an adult before the titular character is actually the hero of the entire story. Many tears were had at the end of this book. I have endured laughter at the hands of my housemate for weeping over a "kid's book."
