Don't pick this book up looking for a work of literature or a thoughtful read of any kind (honestly though, if you see this cover and read that blurb and think that's what you're getting, you deserve to waste your time). DO pick this book up if you enjoy dysfunctional characters, puns, parody and satire (especially of horror/zombies) and want a very light, fun read the equivalent of a cheesy action movie. If you like those things (and also cows, liking cows is also a good thing for this novel), you may have found an enjoyable and short read. I always find it hard to take books about zombies seriously, as much as I love them. It's just hard to write a realistic zombie novel. Apocalypse Cow takes that absurdity and runs with it, taking advantage of the tired tropes of zombie novels and satirically twisting it. Is it predictable as some people complain about in other reviews? Yes, a little, by nature of the parody. This is a novel not at all about freshness, but about laughing in the face of that which IS stale in the zombie genre. This is one book I am glad I judged by the cover! I would like to hug the author of this book.I found this at Half Price Books, and bought it strictly because the name was hilarious. How could anyone NOT want to read a book called "Apocalypse Cow"? I didn't even care at the time if it was going to suck or not.Turns out it was brilliant. An absolutely hilarious book. The characters were quirky and lovable and wierd, the situation was downright ridiculous, while managing to be terrifying at the same time. What a wonderful read. I want a sequel.
