About book Anthill (2010)

Wow!A wonderful read.Touted a a Huck Finn book, I was happy to have read this. It details the early part of a young man's life, being attracted to bugs and especially ants. He bends his learning towards knowing more of ants and then law, in order to preserve the tract of land on which these particular ants live. Kind of bogs down a little but the middle partmofnthe book was absolutely fascinating to me. It details thencolo y of ants from the ant perspective. Very well done. Scientific knowledge passed on to us but in understandable and enjoyable fashion. The latter part of the book continues with the life of the young man and whether or not he succeeds. Great book indeed! Raff Cody has been raised near an ecological parcel of land in Alabama. As a boy, he spends many hours in that area and acquires extensive knowledge on the wildlife and plants. After obtaining his degree at university, he decides not to become an ecologist because he is concerned about the ecologically sensitive area being developed into commercial property. He decides the only way to protect it is to become a lawyer using conflict resolution rather than picketing and demonstration. Several chapters are devoted to life in the anthills and the complex society that is contained in each one. There is a surprise ending which I certainly didn’t expect. It’s an interesting read and I learned more about ants.
