About book Annemden Kalan (2000)

I was lucky to win this book through a New Year blog giveaway. I have never read anything by Nan Rossiter and I enjoyed it. A story where three sisters reunite at the family home after their loving mother dies from Alzheimer's. I like the personalities of the sisters and how they got along their families joining them later in the week. The author gives vivid details of the family home and the tea shop the mother owned. I felt like I was there. When I started reading the book I thought it would be predictable but I was wrong. The girls find out a secret their mother kept from them since their father was killed. Mia (the mother) and husband went out for dinner on their fifth wedding anniversary but on the drive home he is killed in a car accident. Mia raises the three girls as a single mother. When the daughter's are going through Mia's things they find a ring and card from a person named David. This is the time the story starts to gain momentum. Who is David? What was the relationship between David and Mia? They uncover Mia's handwritten memoir with surprising revelations about their mother's secret relationship with a well-known painter. The sisters do have issues of their own. Beryl (the one who lives in the same town) revisits her old friend and his daughter (his wife has died), and the other two sisters have marriage and family problems as well. Beryl, the youngest sister, was my favorite character. I recommend this heartwarming books. I don't think you will be disappointed. Well this is the first book of the New Year and I think I got off to a good start. This is a story of 3 sisters who return to New Hampshire for the funeral of their mother who has died of Alzheimers. Each sister comes home with their own family baggage of difficult marriages and financial woes. The week before the actual funeral as the sisters are going through their mother's things, they find out secrets their mother has kept for years. Each of the sisters react in different ways to what their mother was hiding but in the end her mother and her story bonds the sisters in ways that they never could have imagined. The story was a fast read and a good contemporary chick-lit type novel but not heavy on the stereotypical chick-lit features. There were no raging love scenes, just building of good honest relationships. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good contemporary fiction novel. 4 stars! I will definitely be reading more of this first time author for me.
