About book Anne Perry And The Murder Of The Century (2011)
A lifelong true crime fanatic I was (and still am) captivated by this episode, having gained interest along with others by Peter Jackson's movie. And as such I've plowed through many true crime chronicles, some exceptionally good and others just a slog. This one falls a bit short. The narrative line at times felt a bit stunted, as in wait, this is where I have to put in background.. While the background was intensive, and I most appreciated the point by point of the trial which I haven't before read, it tried to mimic "In Cold Blood"- one of my favorites. But Truman Capote confidently laid out a much more intriguing literal plan. After the start of this book with the actual "moider" (a strong point), it didn't pick up with a strong follow-up, slowing down -just a mistake in outline. From the point of the trial it maintained interest as the "aftermath" was as fascinating as the build-up to the crime, possibly more so. In fact, the build-up to the crime seemed sped-through. I do appreciate the depth with which Graham explained their backgrounds, family dynamics and characters and situations which I haven't found before. I just think all of the information could have been polished up more to have a more intriguing continuity instead of at times reading like it was "trying too hard" to be an "In Cold Blood." Any faults had to do with styling, not the in-depth and fascinating facts so carefully dug up by Graham. I went into reading this book because I recognized the name of the author Anne Perry, although I have never read any of her novels. This book really reads li8ke a novel, with the addition of all the background information on each of the girls. It is a true, but horrific murder story. Done with premeditation, and no visible remorse. It is a fascinating psychological study on mental illness. I know I was amazed that a convicted killer was not only out but has a blossoming career as an author. I feel a sorrow for the murder victim, but find it a lot harder, mentally ill or not, to have sympathy for those who express no remorse or regret. This did cause me to research the story a little more and even saw a snippet of an interview with Anne Perry. Read to find out how she is out and living so well!
