About book And There Was Light: The Extraordinary Memoir Of A Blind Hero Of The French Resistance In World War II (2014)

This is an extraordinary story about a young man whose inner light literally saved his own life. I found his insight to be enlightening and deep. The two truths which are the core of his story are that "joy does not come from outside, for whatever happens to us is within" and that " light does not come to us from without. Light is in us, even if we have no eyes." Profound thoughts!Having said that, I think this book is probably a little too philosophical for the average book group. Jacques Lusseyran lost his sight at an early age, but recounts how he began to 'see' better and better through and awakening to his senses and his heart. He ended up leading a large group of French youth in the resistance during the Nazi occupation of France. This is so worth reading and challenges our vision-centered way of experiencing the world--it has really expanded how it occurs to me to experience my senses.
