Oh, look, a vampire anti-hero. That's new.Oh, and look, there's two fridgings, the destruction of a close female friendship due to hidden bitterness, and a love story between a man in his (at least) 50s and a woman in her 20s, whom he helped raise. In small defense, he doesn't go for it. But there's no defense for the fact that she extorts a night of sex out of him so she'll help him end his life.I really wanted to like this. I like the idea that this new breed of vampires is straight up powerless on moonless nights. I like that it's a very small amount of things they can be killed by. I like that the old versions of the vampires are getting along just fine, and I enjoyed the art very much.But. No. The first arc is so filled with terrible use of tropes I just don't see how the rest of it is worth my time. There are stronger issues than others in this volume but the two stories, and two authors, per issue works really, really well and sets the series up wonderfully for the next volume. Scott Snyder writes the 1925 story, about a woman named Pearl her finds herself drawn into a new world and then a new life entirely when she becomes a vampires. Not by choice and not just any vampire - an American vampire. I say that unironically - the blood effects people differently depending on their environment and where they're from and American vampires are not only stronger than European vampires but also have the ability to walk during daylight. The original American vampire is an outlaw who ends up a vampire by accident - his tale from the 1800s is told by Stephen King and is just as smooth and slick as any other great Stephen King offering. The art is fantastic and the vampire are definitely scary looking - no lovable types here. You can argue for Pearl but I'm curious to see how that goes. I'm curious to see how the whole series goes!

Quality book. Stephen Kings first attempt at writing a comic. Western vampire with a twist. Sweet!

Wow. That about sums it up. Between Snyder and King, with Rafa's art, this is just fantastic.
