About book American Buffalo: In Search Of A Lost Icon (2008)
This book is part natural history, part hunting adventure. The author won a lottery for a limited-draw permit to hunt Bison in Alaska. He had always been fascinated by these animals, and with luck and determination he was provided the chance to hunt one. Throughout the book, his quest for a bison is enriched with an in-depth look at bison evolution, dangers to its survival, and almost total destruction by mankind. Some parts of the book are humorous, others scary, and some of the language or descriptions come across as graphic or strong. This is in fact a hunting memoir, and potential readers need to know that there is indeed blood and guts involved. He treats the animal with respect, but also describes in detail the butchering process, and without intent to offend or disgust. It is what it is, he is simply turning an animal into food, salvaging every last bit he can, and then risking his life to transport it all back to civilization. At times, it becomes a struggle to stay alive when he suffers with hypothermia, frostbite and a near drowning. All in all, this is an excellent read, and I immediately started re-reading it from the beginning, because I found it so engrossing. wow, I bought this book because I like the picture of the buffalo on the cover. I always had a thing for buffalo I guess. I read the book during a beautiful day when I could have been off running or doing some exploring, but got lost in the book until I turned the last page. I think the reason for this is that you feel like you are along side the author on his adventure and he doens't really give you a reason to step away. I will look forward to finding more books by this author.Anyone living in San Francisco: I found this book at "dog ear books". I picked it kind of at random. This is a used book store, and it appears that they only have the best of the used books out there, or the person picking the books likes exactly what I like. This is probably the 10th book I pulled at random from that store that is on one of favroite's list. enjoy
