About book America Pacifica (2011)

This book gives renewed strength to the old saying 'Never judge a book by its cover' The cover art is beautiful, the blurb suggests an exciting sci-fi plot that will keep you well and truly on your toes. Ten pages in however, and the sorry truth begins to unfold. The plot is slow moving and at times dare I say, boring? The reader is expected to care about characters we know little or nothing about and half way through I am inclined to believe that the editor accidently dropped a few pages before the book went to print, giving an explanation as to when exactly Darcy becomes a famous name as a hero of the new world. A seriously disappointing book with gaping holes throughout. America Pacifica has a lot of similar elements to other dystopian young adult lit I've read over the years. What I found rather refreshing (and also depressing) about this particular version of the story is the main theme of how power can really screw up the world, and how cyclical this screw up can be. Idealists are young, power corrupts the old, revolutions occur and the cycle begins again. Its the kind of story that I can understand having lived through so much recent upheaval, feeling hopeful about progressivism, and then seeing change happen so slowly, and sometimes not at all. But read on, there is hope... (I'm not being facetious!)
