About book Always Looking Up: The Adventures Of An Incurable Optimist (2008)
I read Michael J. Fox’s first book, "Lucky Man" almost ten years ago. In that book, actor Michael J. Fox wrote about his acting experiences and about his Parkinson’s Disease. In this book, Michael writes more about living with Parkinson’s. He founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2000. In this book, he writes about how he became active in the push for stem cell research to try and push for a cure. I have assisted an elderly man who has Parkinson’s Disease, and in my assistance, I learned a lot about this progressive disease. What Michael J. Fox seems to want is to educate people about the disease, and in that regard he found purpose. In this book, he writes about faith. He is not Jewish, but his wife Tracy is. He writes about being in an interfaith religion and its effects on his life and his family. He has children and he writes about them. I found the book to be interesting and inspiring, as Michael does not allow the disease to defeat him. It gives him strength. I picked this up by chance and knew nothing of Michael J Fox's history of Parkinson's Disease. As a result the book was enlightening and interesting. I think what most surprised me was his engaging style of writing and his modesty and normality despite being a famous name. His family values and his desire to make something of his life outside of acting make him valuable as a person and much more than a well-known actor. It is an inspiring read.
