ABDICATION by Juliette Nichols, takes place on England I. 1936. King George V has died and his rather impetuous son David, officially King Edward VIII is proving that he is not the man his father was. The eventual abdication is merely the backdrop to the story.At the same time, brother & sister Sam and May Thomas have left their native Barnsdos, to seek their fortune in England. For the time being, they will stay with their 1/2 Jewish cousins in London's East End. Purely by happenstance, May is quickly hired by Englidh Lotd Sir Philip Blunt as a combination secretary and chaufer. Sam joins HMJ.Meanwhile, Mrs. Wallis Simpson is finding herself with few allies and Lady Blunt, while kind to a fault, is wallowing in a tragedy that she only manages to escape from time to time. Ever the pragmatist, Mrs. Simpson sends for their "poor relation" Evangeline Wald to both amuse her as well as humor her. Evangeline does not have either the wit or style of a Wallis and she is more than ready to become a "somebody" after a life of being the third wheel.As 1936 unfolds. May finds herself more needed than ever, Wallis finds her dreams squashed by English tradition and Evangeline is torn by a bad case of "wannabe iris", untrqreqited list and pure envy.While we know how the Duke& Dutchess of Windsor's story plays out, Evangeline and May's story will both lift us up and give us that "haha" she brought it all on herself satisfaction ,I recommend ABDICATION to any follower of the House of Windsor. As a matter of fact I recommend it to everyone. It is pure delight. What a poor excuse for writing- story line was all over the place with so many characters and none that I really wanted to care about. I am wishing the author had focused on a one main character (such as May) and told the story from their viewpoint instead of coming in from so many foci. If BBC wants to make a movie out of this...go for it but I advise hiring a really good script writer to make this story happen. As its currently written...not worth the time or trouble.

I did really like ths but expected more on the Edward/Wallis theme. A great period piece though.

3.5 stars...this book makes me want to read more histroical stuff about Edward and Wallis!!
