About book Almost Somewhere: Twenty-Eight Days On The John Muir Trail (2012)

I was looking forward to this book a lot, in part because of my own interest in hiking the Muir Trail, and in part just because I love pretty much any book that takes me outdoors. And I did enjoy the elements in Almost Somewhere that described the trail and its rewards and challenges. However, far too many pages are devoted to the squabbling and competition among the three young women who took on this long hike, and that grew tedious. Roberts says that this experience changed her life, and that may be true, but I couldn't really see how from the book. Three and a half stars. I loved this book. I always love travel tales, particularly as they are written from a female voice, and I love the focus within this book on women and nature, and how this differs from men and nature. Roberts emphasizes and demonstrates the female tendency to find connectivity rather than competition and conquest in nature, an idea which has made so much sense to me since reading the works of Carol Gilligan. Plus, having hiked 60 miles of the John Muir Trail myself, I could identify with some of what she was experiencing along the way and felt myself revisiting a kindred place.

Fun, easy-to-read travel memoir. Almost makes me want to go on a backpacking trip.
