About book All Over The Map (2010)

One of the wonderful thing about reading is the ability of a book to totally surprise you and realign your thoughts. This book did that for me.A good friend, and prolific reader, shared it with me as a book she thoroughly enjoyed. I couldn't get beyond page fifty, but it prompted me to spend time thinking about writing and reading and what I look for in a book and the various ways the same book can be read. Isn't that the magic of reading?I read primarily for character and environment. I don't need to like the characters, but I want them to prod me or provoke me in some way.Perhaps I should be more forgiving of Ms. Fraser's narrator because she certainly did provoke me. What she did not do was interest me, and from my point of view, that was her crime. With almost every word that I read, I felt that I was engulfed in my very own story. I was drawn in within the first few pages, but I was smitten on page eight... "The men in my life are always like the countries I visit: I fall in love briefly and then move on. I visit, regard the wonders, delve into the history, taste the cooking, peer into dark corners, feel a few moments of excitement and maybe ecstasy and bliss, and then, though I am often sad to leave - or stung that no one insists that I stay - I am on my way." Oh, how this resonates!!! I, like many of my nomadic, single friends, have struggled with finding the balance between a whimsical, free-spirited life of wanderlust combined with a life of passionate romance and companionship. When faced with a broken heart, a woeful entanglement, or sometimes simple sadness, my initial inclination is to run away to far away lands and immerse myself in the unknown in search of empowerment. Laura Fraser tackled these very same feelings & emotions with grace, even when it didn't seem possible. Take the time to read this memoir to see just how she reclaimed her life after a decade of pivotal moments. You might just find your story unfolding in front of your very eyes with every word that you read!
