Original, inviting artwork and the pieces of story that are referring to inter-generational ties are engaging. The poetry is sometimes flowing and sometimes clunky, but more than anything I was just uncomfortable with the comparisons of random objects being classified as "family" or "husband and wife" as if things and human relationships were equivalent.In an era where traditional families or even terms for traditional families are under attack, this felt a little "dangerous". Change the word families to groups and this would have been a fun, little story. The first thing that caught my attention about this book were the amazing illustrations. They are so colorful with so much to look at, they really catch your eye. The other wonderful thing about this book is that it shows children that there are all KINDS of families. "Eggs in an egg carton can seem like a family", and on goes many, many more pairings of unusual things that make up a family. I also love the repetitive phrase, "Bottle caps, gingersnaps, button, or rings, You can make families from all sorts of things!" This is a wonderful book to teach children about diversity!
