About book Alexander Outland: Space Pirate (2012)

From the preview, I was quite excited. I love good space adventure and am not a fan of hard or military SF. This book and the premise had a lot going for it.I made it through about 57% of the book before I gave up. Didn't like any of the characters, and the lead character, and the namesake of this book, is just such an angsty, jealous, petty, sexist, gumboot. The dialogue, I suspect, is the writer trying to write witty banter, but it doesn't work in my opinion. Part of that might be because I had the feeling that the writer was female (I had to verify this because I just saw her initials on the book cover) trying to write an alpha male as she perceives them. The other characters didn't have enough going for them that I cared about any of them, but I didn't finish the book, so perhaps they magically became interesting later. I picked this up on a whim because of it's cover. I opened it up because it looked intriquing. I read the first chapter (2 pages) and was hooked. It's a firefly-like setting in that there is a captain and a crew with a similiar make up to our old fav. They are pirates...or aquirer's of other peoples wealth who occasionally do legal things to earn money and keep ahead of the law. From there, the book takes on it's own persona. The story revolves around the crew trying to find magma on a legal job. On the first planet they visit, women on planet remember the carousing of Captain Napolean "Nap" Outland and chase them off planet. The retreat to space only to be harrassed by a Pirate Armada. Using Outlands superior flying skills, they land on the Planet Helion. From there, think out of the frying pan and into a great big fire. I really like how the author brought the story together, and the characters. They are 'almost' characatures of typical space memes...The braggart Captain, the infalliable Chief Engineer, the Lady of the ship, the old man... but they have their own distinct qualities that endear them to you fairly quickly. The book isn't deep. It isn't high brow. It is fun and quick and well written within those parameters. I was a little surprised by the ending...and feel that it may have been pulled off a might too easily...but in the end, it didn't change my enjoyment of a good book.

Do You like book Alexander Outland: Space Pirate (2012)?

Story got bogged down in witty conversations, but quite enjoyable.
