I think this book is something special. First of all, Irene is someone who doesnt get knocked out easily. As you go reading this book you get more and more enthusiast with Alex´s progress until you become absolutely enthralled by such linguistic and cognitive discoveries like the "nu-hu-tuhh" and "none" events (not going to give details). Also your heart sometimes gets some joy at feeling how the Author describes her life´s conditions in a way which speaks of acceptance and positivism despite several lacks in many areas, which shows you her relentless and absolute passion for her work. It also makes you more conscious and its an absolute paradigm breaker in the animal cognition field. I hope Irene is now as happy as ever and I can only speak in gratitude for this marvellous ride. Thank you Irene! This book was touted as a story of the bond between a woman and her parrot, but it read more like her memoir with some parrot sprinkled in. This was her chance to highlight her scientific studies in a mainstream format. I didn't get the sense that there was such a special relationship between the two...he lived at the lab and worked with other humans so as to not affect the validity of her research. Not much of an emotional, pull at your heart strings book. Unimpressed.
