About book Aleksanterin Opettaja (2009)

I had been trying to find a historical fiction about Greece for such a long time. You'll tell me that this book deals primarily with Macedon. In any case, I truly like the portrayal of Aristotle and Alexander in this book. This Alexander is complex not a hero but not a monster either. Just a peculiar child who grows into an even more peculiar adult, a king too. Aristotle is different from what I imagined in my mind during my lessons. He is less sunny, more of an introvert. What I liked best was the writing style, it left the reader infer their own meaning. It was like watching a pond with koi fish in it. Very calm on the surface but the deeper you look the more you see things. Annabel Lyon was also good at depicting the mores of the time without resorting to info dump. I was quite disappointed with this book. I give the author points for making the characters readable by there actions rather than just description. And it was pleasant to read more about the women of the fourth century B.C.E. However, the book was not really very interesting, in short. And it did not have the advantage of adding any knowledge or understanding of the historical characters.I would not recommend it. Not really worth the time when there are so many great books out there.
