About book AIDP 13. 1947 (2000)

Little Hellboy is so cute in this followup to 1946. It's fun to see the B.P.R.D. in its infancy, too. There's a great correlation there, with Hellboy just wanting the professor to play baseball with him and the B.P.R.D. agents just wanting to go drinking in Paris. All the usual fun creepy stuff is here, but the agents are so unprepared for it, and it's like the professor is really unprepared for dealing with Hellboy, too. The parallel storyline is fantastic, and so subtle you almost miss it. The art on this volume is awesome too, especially when you consider it was done by two different artists. After a decade of Hellboy and BPRD stories, Mike Mignola jumps back to the very early days of the secret government agency that protects mankind from the things that go bump in the night. At this time in history, Hellboy is in grade school, so not much help in fighting monsters. Professor Broome recruits scientists, soldiers and occult scholars to help him investigate a supposed vampire sighting. They are of course in way over their heads and in the course of learning how to do their job a lot of people die.Fun mix of history, mythology, mystery and adventure.Without Hellboy the suspense is taken up a notch, as these guys are not as sturdy, so there's no reassurance that anyone in the cast, besides the Professor will survive. As the main BPRD series was getting more and more convoluted, this minis were a nice break from the bigger stories.

Another early B.P.R.D./Hellboy tale. Nice read and visuals - the 2 illustrators combo works well.
