About book Ahlaksız Teklif (Bir Küçük Siyah Elbise Kitabı) (2000)

Ugh. The prevailing sentiment I can come up having just finished "Dating Mr. December" is...ugh.I wasn't expecting classic literature when I finally cracked this book open on my Nook. I was little for a little palate cleanser. I have several longer, somewhat more serious, certainly heavier options waiting for me, and I wanted a quick little read that I didn't have to think too much about or spend too much on. It was chick lit, and there's room in the world for chick lit, when it's done right. This was not done right. My first problem with the book is that it moves too quickly. When you pick up the book you realize that the two main characters are going to end up together, so I'm not spoiling anything, but Ashley rushes them to a conclusion. There are supposed to be months between when they first meet and when they end up declaring their love for each other, but it doesn't flow that way.Second, the characters are just annoying. Will is too perfect. Emma is too damaged. And then they spend 200 pages vacillating over being too perfect and/or too damaged for each other. There wasn't enough drama inherent in the plot so Ashley made up more by having the characters waffle back and forth. It was particularly onerous because you knew they were going to get over it, so it was all very much ado about nothing. My final criticism is that I think Ashley walked a fine line (and fell back and forth over it a few times) between having this be a regular chick lit book and one of the raunchier romances. The problem is that having veered onto both sides of the path, she didn't fill out the story well according to either genre. To put a fine point on it, there was too little romance and conversely, too little good sex. A fast-paced and funny romance that entertains. Nothing to take too seriouly,I am not sure why everyone was do surprised that Will was not into the whole calendar idea. I do not think his reaction was that bad - considering that he was being asked to take his clothes off in front of his entire community. This could lead to akward situations during daily interactions (the girl behind you in the grocery store whispeing about how you look naked..). It also may offend some - people he potentially has to do business with. Perhaps if the calendar was not a naked one, I have seen a lot of very nice calendars full of good looking men fully clothed(there is a lot to be said for anticipation and imagination!) Also I felt that for someone who had a high powered job in the city Emma was a bit insecure. She handled the situation with her ex beautifully she should be strong enough to realize that he was no good for her! I was not surprised that Will was the one left at the altar. I was disappointed to find that he did not share this information because he was embarrassed - I had him pegged as protecting the fiancee even though she did not deserve it.The ending was sweet. Happily Ever After is really the reason I read a romance and this one worked.
