About book About Average (2012)

This deceptively simple book has important messages packed into it, in a quiet, pleasing story. Jordan is in the last few days of her 6th grade classes, aware that next year she will be a middle schooler on her way to adulthood. An extremely pragmatic child, she examines herself and decides that she has no special looks or talents. She's just average. For some reason, though, one of the pretty, talented, smarter girls has begun bullying her and Jordan must figure out a way to stop it while being true to herself. I really enjoyed Jordan's journey of discovery and will look for more books by this author. We listened to the audio version of this book. Loved the subject matter. If you want to teach your children how NOT to be a bully and also how to handle the bullies they may encounter in their lives, this is a good book to use as an example. I was impressed with the goodness and rightness (and also the brutal honesty) of the way the main character chose to deal with her bully. I think, though, it's important that children know it's not always the under-achievers and the not-quite-so-pretty ones who get picked on by the beautiful, smart, and popular. Sometimes it's the other way around.
