About book A Verdade Sobre O Caso Harry Quebert (2012)
i am putting this novel directly in the trash. not donating it to the library, not giving it to a friend. nope, this one reads like a very good high school student's senior paper, ie which only a mother could love.writing is okay, not bad but nothing special. plot is tiresome and repetitive. the last 200 pages spin one wild theory/story after another and introduce crazy new elements into the plot and it spins out of control. i guess graduation approached and the student had to quick wrap it up and turn it in. I slogged through all 640 pages of this book because I was hoping for a nice, satisfying twist at the end. Yes, there was a twist, but not enough of one to compensate for the time to get there. If there hadn't been a surprise ending, I would have rated this book only one star.I don't know if it was the original version or an artless translation, but writing was stilted and awkward, particularly dialogue. (Flipping through to a random page...)"You're married, Sergeant? That's funny. You're so disagreeable, I would have bet anything you didn't have a family."He sank his face into his double chin. "In the name of God, what do you want?" he barked."To understand.""That's pretty ambitious for a guy like you.""I know.""Let the police do their job, will you?""I need information, Sergeant. I have a pathological desire to know everything. I'm a control freak, you see--I have to control everything.""Really? Then control yourself!""Could we go to your office?""No."Unfortunately, that's pretty typical. I recommend passing on this book.

Kyllähän tämä ihan mukiinmenevä päätä vaivaamaton lukuromaani oli, mutta ei nyt kuitenkaan yhtyisi takakannen hehkutuksiin "supertähdestä" ja "järisyttävästä romaanista". Toinen lukemani romaani peräkkäin, jossa pohdittiin varsinaisen tarinan lisäksi kirjalijuutta ja kirjoittamista, ja tässäkin järisyttävän itsetietoisesti. Ärsyttävää, eikä oikeastaan kiinnosta. Lisäksi luulisi, että 800-sivuisessa tiiliskivessä saisi jonkinlaista syvyyttä luotua henkilöhahmoihin, mutta itselleni jäi kyllä huijattu olo siinä mielessä, että monet keskeisten henkilöiden tekemistä ratkaisuista jäivät melko päälleliimatun oloisiksi, eikä niitä voinut ymmärtää hahmon aikaisemman kuvauksen perusteella.

Je me demande pourquoi on a tant parlé de ce roman...si c'est car un Français (ou bien un Suisse?) a réussi à achever un roman dans le style d'un mass market paperback américain, ok, mais... J'admets que c'était vite et facile à lire et aussi que je voulais vraiment savoir ce qui s'était passé mais on peut achever ces mêmes effets sans tant de steréotypes et de répétition...je n'aimais non plus le côte nombriliste du texte.
