About book A Traitor To His Class The Privileged Life And Radical Presidency Of Franklin Delano Roosevelt (2008)
The book is an intriguing account of the the politician, president and the flawed human being he was in many respects. In all, it is a panoramic view of a man made by the times of depression and war and how he responded to both. He towered above the course of the nation through the most trying times that can be imagined, and he led with aplomb, with creativity, and with political instincts that drove his success in confronting the monumental challenges of his twelve plus years as president. The book provides a wonderful look at a time of depression and war, and how a man rose to the occasion to lead the nation to victory in both. This book is a strong biography of FDR. It's a valuable WWII text, especially on the relationship between Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill. On that count it's probably the strongest WWII book I've read yet. Where it falls down is in the 'traitor to his class' subtitle. Brands leaves very little evidence of what his peers thought of him save a handful of Republicans in regard to the New Deal and his economic plans.
