My sister recommended "A Summer in Sonoma" as a good chick flick read, ideal for a summer escapism book. In a single word, predictable. Four long-time female friends in their early thirties, each with a different angst - single looking for love from all the wrong men, career woman facing recurring cancer, deeply in debt married with children, unhappily married to an inattentive husband. Pair these with their male counterparts - suave doctor, devoted husband working two jobs, slovenly sports fan, and biker dude. As soon as all the characters are introduced the reader can surmise the coming scenarios. As for the ending, no surprises - simply predictable.I found the title misleading, more appropriate would be Sometime in Sacramento; however, who's going to pick up a book with that title. While a few Harley rides are taken to the Sonoma countryside the story truly takes place in a much less appealing city. Unfortunately, the events in Sonoma offered little sense of place. The potential was much greater than the end result. Yet the image of the biker dude complete with boots, chains, beard, ponytail and nude lady tattoo is repeated and repeated. If this book were to become a chick flick let's hope they have the good sense to shoot the picture in scenic Sonoma and skip Sacramento. Carr is an author I've planned on reading but never seemed to get around to her books. This book was reminiscent to me of some by my favorite authors - Sherryl Woods, Susan Mallery and Debbie Macomber to name a few. Strong female characters with strong bonds as friends + plus their husbands, boyfriends and significant others. Set in California with such variety to their personalities but they all blend and are stronger together than apart. Wonderful read with happily ever afters in the love department. I look forward to reading more by this author!
