Grim novel, with several main characters and simultaneous plot lines converging. While well-written, I thought the ending a bit pat. Brundage's skill as an author is her ability to hold the reader's attention, even though the characters are not likable, some heinous, and their actions desperate and even despicable. Three stars for that reason - she writes well; wasn't crazy about the story itself. I picked up this book at the local bookstore based on the title and blurb on the back. It took me a little bit to get into it, but by the time I finished I realized I actually liked it. The story is told in separate sections, each a viewpoint of one of the characters. I like how the author managed to tie each section together at the end. My impression of each character changed as the book went on. While I wouldn't call it a must read, I'm happy I didn't give up on it!
