About book A Stranger In Wynnedower (2012)

Reviewed by JudyBook provided by the author for reviewReview originally posted at Romancing the BookShades of Nancy Drew and The Hidden Staircase! Shades of the evil Mrs. Danvers in Rebecca! Shades of Jane Eyre and locked rooms and mysterious shadows and the glowering Mr. Rochester!Rachel Sevier exhibits just the right touch of post-tragedy reclusiveness, stubborn independent pride and melting womanhood. Jack Wynne, tight-lipped and possessive of the old family home–and the secret he hides behind its walls–is the perfect foil. Enter the mysterious stranger David Kilmer who speaks of unrequited love, and the dour housekeeper who would rather not speak to Rachel at all. Throw into the mix others who come and go–but for what purposes and with what motives?Wynnedower is crumbling, falling prey to the elements and to looters who are more than just petty thieves. Rachel vacillates between wanting to see it renovated and not caring if it’s bulldozed. David just locks himself in the dining room and denies any possibility for the house’s ultimate redemption. But together they uncover options never dreamed of, and they must learn to trust each other if a resolution is ever to be found.A good mystery sans shock-value language and with just the right dash of romance is hard to find–but you’ll find it in A Stranger in Wynnedower. If you’ve read any of the above-mentioned books and loved them as this reviewer has done, you’ll buy into Grace Green’s romantic suspense from beginning to end.Favorite Quote: He cast those dark, yet warm eyes upon her and reeled her in over a plate of ravioli. This novel contains elements of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Unfortunately, it has a bit of Harlequin Romance thrown in for good measure. That's the only thing that keeps me from giving it five stars. It's well written, so if you like that sort of thing, you'll enjoy it. There was enough action and suspense to keep me satisfied. If the edition I had read had had the cover shown on this site, I probably wouldn't have read it. I thought it was more a "creepy old house" story. It is that, and more.
