About book A Semester In The Life Of A Garbage Bag (1995)

This was another book that profoundly influenced me. After I read this, I stopped wanting to be Rudy Miller, and started trying to be Raymond Jardine. The book is about Sean Delancey, at least nominally, and how his new partner for the big semester project in English is ruining his life. That would be Raymond Jardine, who always refers to himself in the third person as "Jardine".Jardine is the unluckiest person in the world, but he has a plan to change that. He needs to stand out from the rest of the school, so he'll be chosen for the school system's summer trip to the Greek island of Theamelpos. Maximum of 6 chosen per school. So, between september, when the english project is assigned, and the end of the semester, when they make the selections, he needs to become one of the top six students in the school. The centerpiece of this plan is the aforesaid english project, which must be "absolutely top-notch" to rescue Jardine's otherwise awful english grades. The project is a semester-long poetry analysis paper. Each pair chooses a poet and runs with him or her. Jardine insists on choosing a complete unknown to impress the teacher. Unfortunately, their poet turns out to be unknown because he died fifty years ago, after writing only one poem. Their solution to this problem is... well ethically problematic.I've never understood why this hasn't been made into a movie yet. It's everyone's classic high school problem. How do I keep my english partner from flunking me off the basketball team with his schemes to get to Greece? Read this book, you won't just be reading Sean and Raymond's story, you'll be reading your own story as well.
